hatter
英语中有个说法叫as mad as a hatter,意思是极度疯狂。
beret
beret: a cap with no brim or bill; made of soft cloth Beret
cloche hat
cloche hat:a woman's close-fitting hat that resembles a helmet
Cloche hat
lierihattu
lierihattu:a brimmed hat Lierihattu
fedora hat
fedora hat: a hat made of felt with a creased crown
boater
boater:a stiff hat made of straw with a flat crown
cricket cap
double-thread white kipa
kipa:the cloth skullcap or yarmulke traditionally worn by male Jews
helmet
helmet:a protective headgear made of hard material to resist blows
tin foil hat
tin foil hat:A piece of headgear made from one or more sheets of tin foil, aluminium
foil, or other similar material, the hats worn in the belief that they act to shield the brain
from such influences as electromagnetic fields, or against mind control and/or mind
reading.
Tin foil hat
at the drop of a hat
At the drop of a hat从字面上来解释就是:一旦帽子落地。
Tom Atkins is usually a good-hearted friendly guy. But he has one problem -- a
hot temper. Say something he doesn't agree with, and he'll start a loud argument at
the drop of a hat.
hat in hand Hat是帽子,hand是手。
With our new baby and my wife sick, my paycheck just isn't enough for my
family to live on. With business so bad, I hate to do it, but I have to go to my boss hat
in hand and beg for more money.
to wear two hats at a time
To wear two hats at a time就是一个人同时戴两顶帽子。 To wear
two hats at a time是指一个人同时担任两个职务。
例句:They're so short handed at my cousin Joe's office that he has to wear two hats.
He was already a Vice President, but now he is also the treasurer because the old
treasurer quit and they can'tafford to hire a replacement.
to pass the hat
When Bill Brown's baby daughter was hurt in that auto accident last week, we
passed the hat around the office and collected three hundred dollars to help pay the
doctor's bill.
to take one's hat off
I sure take my hat off to my boss. I don't know how in the world he did it, but
somehow he pulled some tricks out of the hat and got us five million dollars to save
the business.

说起办公室里secretary,可能我们首先反应出的意思都是“秘书”,不过secretary可不仅仅有这一层意思,例如遇到下面这个句子要注意了: "I chose the tall secretary where mother sat so often writing letters by a sunny
window."
中共中央总书记 the General Secretary of the
Central Committee of the Communist Party of
China
Secretary of a provincial Party
Committee
书记处 secretariat(secretary的变体)
联合国秘书长 the Secretary General of the
United Nations
美国国务卿 the Secretary of State
美国财政部长 the Secretary of Treasury
美国教育部长 the Secretary of Education
美国国防部长 the Secretary of Defense

一群小狗:a litter of puppies
一群牛:a herd of cattle / a yoke of oxen(oxen是ox的复数形式)
一群苍蝇:a swarm of flies
一群兔子:a nest of rabbits

一串葡萄:a bunch of grapes

一群士兵:a squadron of soldiers /a troop of soldiers / a squad of soldiers / a detail of
soldiers /a party of soldiers

The Chinese public is abuzz about the
recent cross-dressing contestant, Liu Zhu,
on the Super Boy reality show.
Cross-dressing runs significantly counter to
social norms and, therefore, can be seen
as a type of transgender behavior. It does
not, however, necessarily indicate
transgender identity; a person who
cross-dresses does not always identify as
being of the opposite gender. Referring to a
person as a cross-dresser suggests that
their cross-dressing behavior is habitual
There are many different kinds of cross-dressing and many different reasons why an
individual might engage in cross-dressing behavior. Some people cross-dress as a
matter of comfort or style. They prefer clothing associated with the opposite sex.
The Japanese word "newhalf" is used to describe a man who has made the mental
and/or physical transition to being a woman.
The term rekijo, or “history girls”, is used in the Japanese media to describe women
from their late teens to mid twenties are styling themselves on a bygone era and
taking a renewed interest in history.
Historical sites and re-enactments are becoming increasingly popular with the
women eager to capture a sense of their country’s past.
The interest may be a backlash to the emergence of a group called “herbivorous
men” who are gentle, foppish and unaggressive, prompting some young women to
seek out at least the notion of the historical equivalent of the traditional male action
hero.
Japanese men in their 40s and 50s had to compete
intensely for both jobs and women. Thus, they
became known as the "carnivorous" generation.
Now here comes a small but growing class of
"herbivore men", they are young, earn little and
spend little, and take a keen interest in fashion and
personal appearance.
Typically, "herbivore men" are in their 20s and 30s, and believe that friendship
without sex can exist between men and women. They are not eager to find girlfriends
and tend to be clumsy in love.
The group does not care so much about making money -- a quality tied to the fact
that there are fewer jobs available during the global economic recession.
The term "Pink Power" was born in a fierce online
debate among netizens from the post-1970s,
post-1980s and post-1990s generations.
During the debate, in response to the "Red
Generation" which the post-1970s and post-1980s call
themselves, the post-1990s generation brought
forward the concept of "Pink Power", which means
that although the post-1990s generation is still young, they will surely grow up and
shoulder their social responsibility, ultimately the "Pink Power" will turn into "Red
Power" whereby they will become the backbone of the country.
Once post online, the term won hearts of the post-1990s immediately and was
considered as a favorite label for them.
Princess clan is a workplace expression used to
describe those who were mostly born after 1985,
take their job as play, pay too much attention to
their own needs and are too socially
unsophisticated to heed public standards.
Called “princess clan”, but the term doesn’t
necessarily refer to females only. The word
“princess” here has two implications: first, “ge
ge”, the Chinese equivalent for “princess”,
means people in this clan are mostly spoiled and thus very much self-centered;
second, “ge ge” is also the first two words of the Chinese idiom “ge ge bu ru (square
peg in a round hole)”, implying that those people cannot fit in the workplace
philosophy.
Mori girl is buzzward originated from a social
networking website in Japan two years ago,
referring to women in their 20s who pursue a
simple and natural lifestyle. Mori in Japanese
means "forest" and a Mori girl is a girl who
looks like she lives in forests.
You might have seen her dressed in earthy colors that attest to an artistic sensibility
at one with nature. She's part Little Red Ridinghood (although she prefers dark blue,
dark green or bordeaux brown to bright red), part Marie Antoinette pastoral fantasy,
part Alice in Wonderland.
The expression which has a similar pronunciation with "Pizza Hut" in
Chinese, is used to describe those who are above the normal marriage
age but still single and need to keep struggling to find their other half. This
group more often than not put so much time into work that they have little
chance to meet potential partners. So they are considered to be people
who are doomed to be single, and that’s where “doomed single” came
from.
For example:
John doesn't care much about being called “doomed single”, he said he enjoys being
single.
As opposed to a blind date, where you have no idea what the other person looks like,
a nearsighted date is one where you've seen a photo or chatted via web cam before
meeting in person. This can often lead to disappointment if one person or the other
has supplied misleading documentation.
For example:
I went on a nearsighted date last night. The picture he emailed me must have been
from before he quit the gym.
They are female white-collar workers. They
didn't have any plan to have a child until the
economic crisis struck. Then they decided to
get pregnant - as quickly as possible.
They are afraid of getting fired. China's labor
law stipulates that a company should not fire a
pregnant employee unless the company is
insolvent. "Get pregnant as soon as possible"
became a mantra at the height of the economic
crisis. Indeed, so many female employees made this choice that they were
collectively dubbed "the rush-to-get-pregnant tribe".
The coupon-crazed tribe
They are obsessed with coupons. They know which
restaurant serves good but cheap food, which shopping
mall is offering big discounts, and which gym's
membership card is the best bargain. The best part is
they don't even have to step out of their house to get all
the tips: they seek out every bit of information on the
Internet. Their creed is: don't even bother to go shopping if you are not armed with coupons. They are called coupon-crazed tribe.
Some say their "bargain mentality" encourages rational spending, but others also
warn against rash and unnecessary consumption - buying for the sake of coupons.
Strawberry Generation
They look chic and sophisticated. They are
soft and get hurt easily. They seem
unbearably spoilt and can't take much
pressure. They are the so-called
"Strawberry Generation".
The term was coined by a Taiwan writer in
one of her books about office rules. It refers
to the post-60s generation of office workers,
who grew up in a protected environment and got easily dented - just like strawberries
- by life's lightest knocks.
This expression is now finding its way into the mainland, and refers to young workers,
of only child families, who have been active in the workforce for just a year or two.
They are generally well educated but are self-centered and give too much
importance to appearance and material comforts.
(LOHAS, lifestyles of health and
Quirkyalone is a neologism referring to someone
who enjoys being single (but is not opposed to
being in a relationship) and generally prefers to
be alone rather than dating for the sake of being
in a couple. International Quirkyalone Day is
February 14, it started in 2003 as a "celebration
of romance, freedom and individuality".
For the quirkyalone, there is no patience for dating just for the sake of not being
alone. On a fine but by no means transcendent date they dream of going home to
watch television. They would prefer to be alone with their own thoughts than with a
less than perfect fit. They are almost constitutionally incapable of casual
relationships.
Me time is a term which has been popularized by
all forms of the media geared towards issues of
female interest, in particular women's magazines.
The idea is that, amidst the stress of 21st century
life, a woman finds it increasingly difficult to spend
time which is exclusively for her and is not
encroached upon by the non-stop demands of
work and family.
Me time, then, is a period of time when a woman can put herself first and do
something that she particularly enjoys to aid relaxation and revitalization. This might
be as simple as having a bubble bath or sitting down with a cup of
tea, or going on a trip to the gym or a weekend away.
Babe is a word used to address a young woman, or your wife, husband or lover,
usually expressing affection but sometimes considered offensive if used by a man to
a woman he does not know. Now many people use it to refer to an attractive young
woman, for example: she is really a babe.
French word "belle" means beautiful woman, hence, campus belle is the most
beautiful girl in the school.
Hunk is a slang term for a sexually appealing man, a person who is sexually
attractive or a well-muscled, sexualized man.
We often hear about the “generation gap” that occurs between parents and children
when it comes to music, morals, fashion and a host of other things. Now there is a
generation lap, the tendency for young people to be increasingly more technically
savvy than their parents or elders. This gap exists in the use of technology where the
young generation has become the authority, effectively flipping the typical parental
and professional hierarchy on its head in many respects.
They’re not just ahead of their parents in the way they use technology, they’ve
lapped their parents and are working at a whole new level. That’s why there is an
unbelievable example from Finland where the government has hand-selected 5000
Net Generations to train the country’s teachers how to use computers. The students
are the teachers and the teachers will be the students.
拼爹游戏 competition of family background
Someone said: “Life is a game. Following rules is the only way you can survive.”
Young people from poor families complain that they are currently being judged on
their family backgrounds rather than their abilities and knowledge when they are out
seeking for jobs, or finding a potential partner. This is probably another one of
society’s rules and it’s called “competition of family background”.
With a good family background, namely parents of high social status, wealth or
power, the children, known as the “second rich generation,” are able to get decent
jobs and social status ahead of those from poorer families. Children from poor
families think traits like hard-work, creativity and sound academic achievements can
never beat having a “good father”.
A body double is a general term for
someone who substitutes for the
credited actor of a character in any
recorded visual medium, whether
videotape or film. The term is most
commonly used in the context of
head-to-toe (or nearly) shots involving
nudity.
More specific terms are often used in
Robert Pattison and his stunt double
special cases; a stunt double is used
for dangerous or sophisticated sequences. This is in contrast to a stand-in who
replaces an actor for non-filming purposes such as scene arrangement and lighting
adjustments.
Down Aging
"What age is most fun?" asks marketing expert Faith Popcorn. "How about being
stuck at six!" With these words futurist Popcorn highlights a trend she believes will
dominate the midlife years of this generation.
She calls it "Down Aging . . . a return to a
simpler time when we all giggled and played."
Popcorn is right. Like Peter Pan, today's
midlifers want to stay young forever. We miss
the child we once were.
aging(暂译为“找回童真”),指回到我们曾经欢笑和玩耍的那个单纯年代。
You can be both an adult and a child. One can be childlike without becoming childish.
And if your inner child is comatose from disuse, midlife is a good time to revive him or
her.
Following are some tips.
Enjoy the simple pleasures.
Laugh again.
Recover childlike wonder.
View life as an adventure.
The term, zero-Pascal clan, was coined by
Internet users referring to those people who are
always optimistic and enjoy themselves in spite
of work and life pressure. The word “Pascal” is
the unit of measurement for pressure in physics,
zero Pascal means there is no pressure; in this
sense, zero-Pascal clan can also be called
pressure-free clan.
Most people in this clan are 20 to 35-year old white-collar workers and college
students. Since it is impossible to live in a pressure-free society, knowing how to deal
with pressure and understanding the real meaning of life are what really matters.
They work hard, but not eager for a quick success; they are the master of their own
life, refusing to be card slave, mortgage slave or car slave; they may advance slower
in their career, but they surely have a broader view about life.
Rainbow is seen as colorful and cheerful. So, rainbow clan refers to people who are
good at finding a balance between work and life. They have a balanced and healthy
diet, do physical exercises regularly, get enough sleep, and work with high
efficiency,.
“Never make yourself a slave to wealth, enjoy every minute of your
life” is their motto. In their eyes, career advancement and wealth
accumulation coming from overtime working and bad health is just
like pursuing one of the seven colors from a rainbow, it’s by no means
a worthwhile way of life.
What’s a DINKWAD? A DINKWAD is an acronym which stands for “double income,
no kids, with a dog”. It’s an extension of a DINK (double income, no kids), not to be
confused with a DINKY (double income, no kids yet) or a DINKEM (double income,
no kids, excessive mortgage).
For example:
I'm one half of a DINK but I secretly wish to be a DINKWAD.
clan)”。
Over-drained clan refers to employees who find themselves running out of new ideas
as well as enthusiasm after spending all their time and energy on day-to-day work. They are usually regarded as spiritual victims of fast-paced jobs which deprive them
of learning time.
Working pressure and heated competition are the major factors behind the
phenomenon. People have to put a lot of effort into their work to get their job secured,
using up stock of knowledge they’ve got from previous education and losing
enthusiasm for work. Keeping a good work-life balance may help them live a better
life, and a lifelong learning plan will surely enable them to walk away from the clan.
Throughout much of our civilization's history and in various parts of the world, those
with limited options (historically women) have been seeking wealthy partners who
can provide for them, prioritizing financial security over other factors, like romance,
love, looks, and/or compatibility. The term "gold digger" became popular during the
American Gold Rush.
在美国“淘金热”时期,gold digger(“淘金者”,即以色相博取钱财的人,也就是我们俗称的“傍大款”)这个说法开始流行。
Times have changed, but the concept remains
the same. Whether we like it or not, many
people still wish (sometimes subconsciously
or quietly) to find someone who can be a
"breadwinner" for various reasons - so they can stay home to raise children, focus on a dream career that has yet to produce
reliable income, or simply for material comfort. As more women become financially
successful, fewer of them are interested in "gold digging", but male "gold diggers" are
becoming more common.
May-December romance
May-December
May-December romance refers to a romantic
pairing where one person is significantly older
than the other. The age difference is at least a
decade, but often more. The phrase comes from
the younger person being in the "spring" of his or
her life (i.e., May), while the older partner is in his
or her "winter" (i.e., December).
May-December relationships are pretty common
throughout history. British royalty often paired up
differently aged partners based on family trees and political needs. Even modern
arranged marriages can have a large age difference within the couple.
These days, the politically correct term seems to be "age-gap relationships," and
they're not just for movie stars.
You might like texting, frown upon
sexting, but now comes "chexting"-- cheating via
texting-- and it can lead to big trouble.
Golf superstar Tiger Woods and TV celebrity Jesse James have seen their lives
unravel amid revelations of cheating on their spouses, in part by arranging liaisons
via text messages. They are called “chexters”, cheaters that send sexy messages to
someone other than their significant other.
A combination of the words "sex" and "texting," the term
“sexting” refers to the act of sending sexually explicit text
messages - or pictures of oneself - instantly over a mobile phone.
Sexting is a result of advances in technology enabling new forms of social interaction.
Messages with sexual content have been exchanged over all forms of historical
media. Newer technology allows photographs and videos, which are intrinsically
more explicit and have greater impact. A social danger with sexting is that material
can be very easily and widely promulgated, over which the originator has no control.
Ringxiety is a portmanteau neologism
formed from the words "ringtone" and
"anxiety." Ringxiety is described as the
sensation and the false belief that one can
hear his or her mobile phone ringing or feel
it vibrating, when in fact the telephone is not
doing so.
Ringxiety(手机幻听)是由ringtone(手机铃声)和anxiety(焦虑)两个词组合而成的一个词,指在手机没有响动的情况下,人们听到手机响或者感到其振动的错觉。
Other terms for this concept include phantom ring effect and fauxcellarm. The
reasoning for this relates partially to the idea that humans are particularly sensitive to
auditory tones between 1,000 and 6,000 hertz, and basic mobile phone ringers often
fall within this range. False vibrations are less well understood, however, and could
have psychological or neurological sources.
Butt call refers to an unintended phone call placed by sitting on one's cell phone.
Maybe the phone bumped up against something in a purse or briefcase, or rubbed
up against a seat belt. Or maybe the phone fell on the floor. Maybe the person just
sat on their phone—which explains why some industry insiders call inadvertent
dialing "butt calls."
A variation on this theme is the pocket call, an unintended phone call placed by
accidentally pressing the buttons of a cell phone in one's shirt or coat pocket.
There are other things you can do with the technology — the technical terms are
“lifecasting” [here's what I had for dinner] vs. “mindcasting” [here's a thought, a
question, an observation,etc.].
Lifecasting is a continual broadcast of events in a person's life through digital media
and is transmitted through the medium of the Internet. Mindcasting is link flow
adjusted by repeating themes that rise and fade.
Tween
“Tween”is a blend of teen and between. It refers to a child between middle childhood
and adolescence, usually range from 10 to 12 years old. Tweens is generation of
fashion-conscious, fad-loving, filled-with-attitude youth.
Tweens in general, but especially tween boys can be a hard group to be pleased.
They are too old for many toys, may not be interested in clothes or accessories, and
may not even have hobbies.
"Toy boy" has come along in the last 10 or 15 years.
It's British slang, from the 1980s. It refers to an
attractive young man being kept as a lover by another
person, by an older person, that’s the crucial thing:
the older person is keeping the younger man as that
person’s "toy boy".
For example:
He is atoy boy because he has been kept as a lover by a rich old woman for five
years.
A common slang term for visually appealing persons or effects used to draw mass
attention is eye candy. The implication is that they are eye-catching in a superficial
fashion. Like actual "candy", this addition is seen to be neither nutritious nor
substantial, but rather provides a potentially addictive appeal which will sustain the
attention of a wider audience, possibly despite their better nature.
The term may have been originated by interactive videodisc, user interface designers
working at INTERAC Corp. in 1983. Their work integrated text, audio, graphics, photographic images, and video into a seamless presentation. The "eye candy"
referred to visually appealing images supporting the overall message.
The term is also used to refer to actors or actresses perceived to have been cast
primarily for the visual enjoyment of the audience. Various novels, articles, and
stories have used this slang term to show a physical attraction one person has
toward another.
Booth bunny refers to a good looking woman behind the
booth usually representing a product at a trade show. The
'bunny' behind the booth knows very little about the product,
and can't answer any questions, but she sure is attracting
buyers.
For example:
The talent agency typically supplies up to 90 models —
known in trade-show vernacular as "booth bunnies" — to
Comdex(computer dealers exposition) exhibitors, who pay
up to $ 350 a day for top models.
Chick lit is a literary genre that features books written
by women and marketed to young women, especially
single, working women in their twenties and thirties. It
generally deals with the issues of modern women
humorously and lightheartedly. The women featured
in these novels may be obsessed with appearance or
have a passion for shopping.
"Chick" is an American slang term for young woman
and "Lit" is short for "literature". The phrase "chick lit"
appeared in print as early as 1988 as college slang
for a course titled "female literary tradition."
A mockbuster (sometimes also called a knockbuster)
is a film, often made with a low budget, created with
the apparent intention of piggy-backing on the
publicity of a major film with a similar title or theme.
Often these films are created to be released
direct-to-video at the same time as the mainstream
film reaches theaters or video outlets.
